WORDS OF WISDOM

February

  • Ethiopia has been the traditional torch-bearer of African freedom.  What she must accomplish today in the fields of modern education and national development must be infused into this historical context.  Our people must be aware of this.  We therefore urge all those who are educated to teach others less fortunate to strive to seek the skills of literacy.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Rise you mighty people there is work to be done so let's do it little by little.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • The white world has always tried to rob and discredit u of our history.  It is not surprising, however, that white men should resort to every means to keep Negroes in ignorance of their history, it would be a great shock to their pride to admit to the world today that 3,000 years ago black men excelled in government and were the founders and teachers of art, science and literature.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

January 2010

  • In order to advance in our respective undertakings and set ourselves on the right path we have to learn and draw abundantly from the great spiritual heritage which our fathers and forefathers have bequeathed to us. This can give us strength and a sense of continuity which are essential for progress and development. Learning and profound knowledge nurture noble character and impart wisdom.  The family unit and educational establishments have great responsibilities in these endeavors for they are the basis of national progress and prosperity.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Life is for man to live, so let man live life

Hon. Bob Marley

  • To be prosperous in whatever we do is the sign of TRUE WEALTH. We may be wealthy in not only having money, but in spirit and health.  It is the most helpful agency toward a self-satisfying life.  One lives, in an age like this, nearer perfection by being wealthy than being poor.  To the contended soul, wealth is the stepping stone to perfection; to the miser it is the nearest avenue to hell. I would prefer to be honestly wealthy, than miserably poor.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

 December

  • Through continuous reading you can obtain a higher level of education, improve yourselves and your families and render a more significant service to your country.  There are some who continue their studies all their life.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • So Jah sey, not one of my seeds shall sit on the sidewalk and beg no bread.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • This  is the day of racial activity, when each and every group of this great human family must exercise its own initiative and influence in its own protection, therefore, Blacks should be more determined today than they have ever been, because the mighty forces of the world are operating against non-organized groups of peoples who are not ambitious enough to protect their own interests.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

November

  • The proper administration of justice requires a search for truth, therefore the judicial function requires highly selected men.  Judges shall be chosen from among those who studied law and who sacrifice their personal interests to their duties.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • See them fighting for power, they know not the hour.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • The world is not yet perfect.  It is in chaos; yes, in confusion and out of this confusion will come many upheavals that will shake its very foundation.  Fool not yourselves that the conferences that have been held, and will be held in the future, are sufficient to settle the disgruntled state of the world, the dissatisfied condition of humanity. They have not gone down to the root of all evils that give cause to the great discontent, they will never be able to establish a permanent peace and present to us a settled world.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

October

  • There is no protection from the demand that a man’s worth be assessed by his achievements.  Education and learning offer no escape from the obligation of toil.  Social positions and high birth provide no guarantee of soft hands and a life of ease and comfort.  High origins are no passport to high position.  To those who contribute willingly, to the best of their abilities, who, in sweat and toil, work for the good of the nation with little thought of self, to them will much be given, even to the governing of the land.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • You can't educate us for no equal opportunity.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • It is only the belief and the confidence we have in God why man is able to understand his social institutions, and move and live like a rational human being.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

September

  • Today we live in the age of technology in which new discoveries are made daily and there is much yet to which you have not yet been introduced.  A continuous education is therefore essential and there is no short cut to education.  Greatness cannot be achieved without great accomplishments.  All demand striving and endurance.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • It’s only machine that take money.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • The battle of the future whether they be physical or mental, will be fought on scientific lines, and the race that is able to produce the highest scientific development, is the race that will ultimately rule.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

August

  • The opportunity for education, afforded to the few in our country, is not given to them for a fashion or a mode.  It is given for a purpose, for a task, for a high responsibility, for a full and exhaustive use, for the benefit of our country, and the coming generation.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Chance has never yet satisfied the hope of a suffering people. Action, self-reliance, the vision of self and the future have been the only means by which the oppressed have seen and realized the light of their own freedom.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

July

  • The opportunity for education, afforded to the few in our country, is not given to them for a fashion or a mode.  It is given for a purpose, for a task, for a high responsibility, for a full and exhaustive use, for the benefit of our country, and the coming generation.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Want it, want it can’t get it and get it, get it no want it

Hon. Bob Marley

  • The ends you serve that are selfish will take you no further than yourself; but the ends you serve that are for all, in common will take you even into eternity.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

June

  • You young man, whom We have educated at home and abroad, would not have had much to inherit had it not been for the work left by those who lived before.  And now you have to work and leave for posterity achievements that will not subject you to criticism by coming generations.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • When one door closes, another is open.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • There is nothing in the world common to man, that man cannot do.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

May

  • The needed educated individual is one who uses the ideas he obtained from his lectures, books, and discussions to the best advantage of his own country and his own people.  It is he who disseminates new ideas in harmony with the economic and social aspects of his own community so that fruitful results will be realized.  This is the person who can show segments of knowledge he accumulated in his learning, inventiveness in a new situation.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Get up stand up, stand up, for your rights.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Ambition is the desire to go forward and improve one's condition.  It is a burning flame that light's up the life of the individual and make him see himself in another state.  To be ambitious is to be great in mind and soul.  To want that which is worth while and strive for it.  To go on without looking back, reaching to that which gives satisfaction.  To be humanly ambitious is to take in the world which is the province of man; to be divinely ambitious is to offend God by rivaling him in His infinite Majesty.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

April

  • We need educated and trained persons for research, for the study and development of our country’s resources, for technology, for medicine, for the law, and the administration of our people according to their customs.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Though my days are filled with sorrow, I see here a bright tomorrow.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • The political readjustment of the world means that those who are not sufficiently able, not sufficiently prepared, will be at the mercy of the organized classes for another one or two years.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

March

  • Africa has accepted the challenge of modern world and with it come grave responsibilities.  Many discouraging hours will arise before the rainbow of accomplished goals will appear on the horizon.  African civilization in its potential magnitude must be able to command fortitude, patience, tolerance and diligence.  To sustain us in all our tasks we count on the women of Africa.  Without their relentless vigilance no aspect of our responsibilities can be attained.  Women’s role has never been so demanding, and you can be proud to answer this call for the betterment and future of mankind.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Woman feels the pain, man suffer

Hon. Bob Marley

  • What night is to day, is woman to man.  The period of change that brings us light out of darkness, darkness out of light, and semi-light out of darkness are like the changes we find in woman day by day.  She makes one happy, then miserable.  You are to her kind then unkind.  Constant yet inconstant.  Thus we have WOMAN.  No real man can do without her.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

February

  • We need well-qualified people who are proud of being Ethiopians; people who are proud of being Africans; people who are prepared to execute the plans that have already been envisioned.  These are the caliber of men who should be produced in Our university.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • How good and how pleasant it would be before God and man to see the unification of all Africans.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Wake up Ethiopia! Wake up Africa!  Let us work towards the one glorious end of a free, redeemed and mighty nation.  Let Africa be a bright star among the constellation of nations.

 Hon. Marcus Garvey

January 2009

  • We speak of discipline—the capacity to control oneself and follow through to completion what must be done and to place duty first.  We would remind you, however, that iron discipline is not alone sufficient to meet the future.  Restraint and understanding are vital qualities for responsible citizens.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Open up your heart, let love come running in.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • I trust that you will so live today as to realize that you are masters of your own destiny, masters of your fate; if there is anything you want in this world it is for you to strike out in confidence and faith in self and reach for it, because God has created it for your happiness wheresoever you may find it in nature.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

December

  • We must look , into the depth of our souls.  We must become something we have never been and for which our education and experience and environment have ill-prepared us.  We must become bigger than we have been:  more courageous, greater in spirit, larger in outlook.  We must become members of a new race, overcoming petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but to our fellow men within the human community.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • It takes a joyful sound to make the world go around.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • With all preparation the human race has made to welcome into the world the Christ who is to redeem us, we find ourselves still in confusion, still fighting, still exploiting, still merciless in our onslaught one upon the other.  But on this Christmas morn may we not all members and brothers of the great human family, forget our differences, and in one glorious chorus sing out to the world "Peace, perfect peace?"

Hon. Marcus Garvey

November

  • The combination of academic knowledge with technical education will give great satisfaction and will create a self-supporting individual.  It is by the combined use of the mind and the hand that crude material is changed into an article of beauty and value.  The time when manual labor was despised has long passed and we find ourselves in an epoch when manual labor is a source of pride and pleasure not only to the worker but to all.  Laziness is the sole breeder of sin, poverty, and discontent.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • The fire is burning man pull your own weight

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Be as proud of your race today as our fathers were in the days of yore.  We have a beautiful history, and we shall create another in the future that will astonish the world.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

October

  • It is you who must mould the minds of your students—that they may be wise, farsighted, intelligent, profound in their thinking, devoted to their country and government and fruitful in their work.  It is you who must serve as an example.  On their part also, they will have to learn not only formal education but also self-discipline that should be worthy to be inherited.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • The things people refuse are the things they should use.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • If we are to believe the Divine injunction, we must realize that the time is coming when every man and every race must return to its own "vine and fig tree."

Hon. Marcus Garvey

September

  • A well organized education should not be one which prepares students for a good remuneration alone.  It should be one that can help and guide them towards acquiring clear thinking, a fruitful mind, and an elevated spirit.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Strike the hammer while the iron is hot.

Bob Marley

  • You can be educated in soul, vision and feeling, as well as in mind.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

August

  • There is neither shame nor disgrace in a day’s work well and truly done, whatever the task and whatever the rank or status of the worker.  The farmer and the laborer who have toiled diligently throughout the day have earned their bread and honest sleep.  But the man, whatever his task, who has spent his time in idleness, whose hand has been turned to little of profit or value during his waking hours, has earned only the scorn and disdain of his fellowmen whom he has thus cheated.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Open your eyes and look within are you satisfied with the life you are living?

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Ambition is the desire to go forward and improve one's condition.  It is a burning flame that lights up the life of the individual and makes him see himself in another state.  To be ambitious is to be great in mind and soul.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

July

  • Education is an ongoing task.  The obligation to improve oneself does not cease simply because one has a regular job.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Every man has a right to decide his own destiny.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • A man's bread and butter is only insured when he works for it.

Hon. Marcus Garvey

June

  • You should bear in mind the fact that a man who says, “I have learned enough and will learn no further” should be considered as knowing nothing at all.  There can be no time limit for learning and the pursuit of knowledge.  It is essential for you to discover ways of furthering your educational capacity instead of discontinuing it.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Think it’s the end, but it’s only  the beginning.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • There is nothing in the world common to man, that man cannot do.

Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey

May

  • We do not want our legacies and traditions to be lost.  Our wish and desire is that education, develop, enrich, and modify them.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Everything in life got its purpose.

Hon. Bob Marley

  • Education is the medium by which a people are prepared for the creation of their own particular civilization, and the advancement and glory of their own race.

Hon. Marcus Mosiah Garvey

April

  • Education is a means of sharpening the mind of man both spiritually and intellectually.  It is a two edged sword that can be used either for the progress of mankind or for its destruction.  That is why it has been Our constant desire and endeavor to develop our education for the benefit of mankind.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Only a fool lean upon his own misunderstanding.

Hon. Bob Marley

March

  • Everyone, regardless of his age, should strive to learn.  It would be inconceivable for a person to appreciate the meaning of life and living itself without education. It would even be impossible for a person to utilize his God-given gifts.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • You a go tired fi see me face, can’t get me out of the race.

Hon. Bob Marley

February

  • To acquire learning and to put this learning into practice is two different things.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • To divide and rule will only tear us apart.

Hon. Bob Marley

January 2008

  • Development is the accumulated result of intensive long-term efforts.  It is not enough that a nation desire development and economic maturity, any more than a child, in wishing, becomes a man.  Time is required, and experience, and trial and error.  The process and requirements of nature cannot be ignored or evaded.  The child must first crawl, then walk, before it can run.  So, also, must a nation progress through the successive stages of growth before the stage is reached where rapid and ever-accelerating development is possible.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • So you want all for yourself alone yet you don’t think about the other man.

Hon. Bob Marley

December

  • If we do not build the roads and bridges and schools, if we do not plough the fields and till the soil, if we do not carry on the trade and commerce of the nation, to whom shall we look for the accomplishment of these tasks?  Has education been given that the educated may disdain physical toil and perspiration?  Have the healthy been protected from disease that they may scorn the hard labor upon which alone Our nation can hope to advance?  Have not those many nations which today are called “advanced” become so through the toil and labor of their people?

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • They say what we know is just what they teach us.

Hon. Bob Marley

November

  • But, “Man cannot live by bread alone.”  Man, after all is also composed of intellect and soul.  Therefore, education in general, and higher education in particular, must aim to provide, beyond the physical, food for the intellect and soul.  That education which ignores man’s intrinsic nature and neglects his intellect and reasoning power cannot be considered true education.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • It takes a revolution to make a solution.

Hon. Bob Marley

October

  • The person, who, even while at school, realizes the needs of his country and has a proper sense of values and urgency will see what is needed, and will be able to fill it.  He need not be separated from his country and its culture before being prepared to handle a position of responsibility.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Want it, want it can’t get it and get it, get it no want it.

Hon. Bob Marley

September

  • We would like you to realize that the knowledge you have acquired so far is no end by itself but a reminder of the further responsibilities that await you.  There should be such a moment in any man’s life to seek rest after completing his education.  You should not however overlook the fact that it is through ceaseless practice and experience and by training others that you will be able to prove your individual qualification and worthiness.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  •  Where there is a will, there’s always a way.

Hon. Bob Marley

August

  • Nor should anyone today mistakenly believe that only in the cities can he serve his country.  The greater need today is among the people, with those who work the soil, who provide the nourishment and sustenance upon which Ethiopia feeds.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • Concrete jungle, man you have to do your best.

Hon. Bob Marley

July

  • Today’s younger generation must maintain their ties with the people who are the bulk and backbone of the nation.  The problem of the many must become the problem of the few, for only in this way can the progress we earn be lasting and real and of benefit to all.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

  • The children that liveth in darkness shall soon see the light.

Hon. Bob Marley

June

  • Education intensifies natural gifts and ability, but mere education, unless founded on a historical and cultural framework, will bear no fruit.  That is why you should at all times reinforce your learning with the cultural heritage of your fore-fathers—a cultural heritage which you should revive.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Children get your culture, or you won't get no supper cause the battle will be hotter.

Hon. Bob Marley

May

  • If you are open-minded and ready to learn, there are many things which you can learn not only from books and instructors but from the very life experience itself.  There are definitely many things which you can learn from people.  If you are guided by this principle, you will be surprised how pleasant life can be even under trying conditions.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Open your eyes and look within are you satisfied with the life you are living?

Hon. Bob Marley

April

  • Community development comprises two important elements (i) the participation of the people themselves in efforts to improve their level of living with as much reliance as possible on their own initiative, and (ii) the provision of technical and other related services in ways which encourage initiative, self-help and mutual aid and make these more effective.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Why not help one another on the way make it a positive day.

Hon. Bob Marley

March

  • Africa has accepted the challenge of the modern world and with it come grave responsibilities.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • No woman no cry

Hon. Bob Marley

February

  • Our forefathers left us a heritage of a written alphabet, of which we are all today proud benefactors.  It is Our cherished hope that this historic heritage will pass to generations to come.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Now yu get what yu want, and do you want more?

Hon. Bob Marley

January 2007

  • In order to advance in our respective undertakings and set ourselves on the right path we have to learn and draw abundantly from the great spiritual heritage which our fathers and forefathers have bequeathed to us.  This can give us strength hand a sense of continuity which are essential for progress and development.  The harvest of life is character which grows with time and it is this very factor that determines one destiny and future.  We shall always bear this in mind and in so doing, we will avoid personal disaster and will not bring adverse influence on others.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • I see here a new and bright tomorrow.

Hon. Bob Marley

December

  • One should realize that thriftiness is the basis for the accumulation of wealth and the economic growth of a nation.  One seldom minimizes the value of money earned by the sweat of the brow however small it may be, but for the extravagant even a huge amount of money is worthless.  Know how to use your money wisely and effectively.  A habit once formed becomes an incurable second nature.  Therefore utilize your wealth for worthwhile things and avoid employing it for harmful purposes and for monetary pleasures.

Use your savings where it will pay you most.  The hoarding of money does not yield dividends!  If you wish your savings to pay you higher dividends, join in with those of your fellow citizens.  It is through hard work, know-how, and patience that you will be able to increase your capital.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • One, one cocoa full a basket.

Hon. Bob Marley

November

  • True education is not only beneficial to individuals but also to one’s country.  True education goes hand in hand with one’s culture and heritage and strengthens one’s belief in God Almighty

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • When you got a job to do you've got to do it with conviction

Hon. Bob Marley

October

  • Let us, from the greatest to the least, take pride in the performance of the task and duties assigned to us, whether or not we believe them worthy of our talents, whether we labor silent and alone, or in the crowd and illuminated by the glaring light of public opinion.  The reward for the job well done is not in the recognition of others, nor in the public praise.  Neither is it to be measured solely by the monetary return earned by the workman.  It comes, rather, in the inner satisfaction that accompanies the knowledge that the work accomplished represents the best of which we are capable.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • I am doing my best and I am doing it slow.

Hon. Bob Marley

September

  • Education develops the intellect; and the intellect distinguishes man from other creatures.  It is education that enables man to harness nature and utilize her resources for the well being and improvement of his life.  The key for the better and completeness of modern living is education.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Every man has a right to decide his own destiny.

Hon. Bob Marley

August

  • There is nothing as precious to man as a sound mind in a sound body.  And it is essential that the physical well being of our people merit as much attention as its spiritual welfare.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Only the fittest of the fittest shall survive

Hon. Bob Marley

July 2006

  • Knowledge is a treasure that must be grasped and which no one can confiscate; it is a diamond without price which prevents the breaking of heaven's decree and preserves from a path to destruction.  Knowledge allows you to inherit the Kingdom of God, which the mind of man cannot conceive; and is a counselor in time of adversity.  So may God grant you to attain a wisdom and knowledge such as I have described.

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie 1

  • Don't bury your thoughts put your dream to reality

Hon. Bob Marley
